Objective – For undergraduate students research can be hectic and time-consuming and even depressing. The academic library is an integral part of an academic institution that provides different services including research support to the students. individualized research consultations (IRCs) is an underrated library service rarely practiced, even rare for undergraduates. IRC includes students’ selection of appropriate specialized resources/databases, information searching techniques, proper use of keywords and/or subject headings, the accurate use of Boolean operators and enhances the overall digital literary skills to conduct research. For this type of unconventional services outcome analysis is one of the key factors. That’s why several assessment scales were developed, this study also employed a post and pre-test assessment to analyze the outcome of this program.
Methods – Our study used a mixed‐methods approach. Participants were mixed, undergraduate students from different faculties of East West University enrolled in Social psychology for the semester of fall 2022 were considered as participants. Participants were divided into groups, group members here assigned individual tasks to complete their project. To assess the outcome of this program two survey-based questionnaires were employed, an open‐ended and a multiple choice. These two questionnaires were disturbed twice, for pre-test and post-test in order to differentiate their level of learning. The quantitative data were analyzed using MS Excel and the qualitative data was coded manually.
Discussion – The results of this study will contribute to the outcome of library-based Individualized Research Consultations (IRCS) in psychology. The pre-test and post-test will identify the students’ engagement and effectiveness of the program. These finding can also help the library authoity in informed design and development the program based on the users feedback and formula guidelines accordingly.
To design an Individualized Research Consultations (IRCs) for the library considering the potential services like-
Information retrieval (search, authentication and access)
Research data management
Reference management and Citation
To assess the impact of Individualized Research Consultations (IRCs) on the students’ this study will focus on a set of skills following-
Assess the students using search techniques and accessing relevant documents before and after attending the session.
Assess students’ ability to use proper methods while designing research before and after attending the session.
Ability to make quality citations (in APA style) in their paper before and after attending the session.
Define the students’ level of confidence before and after attending the session, associated influencing factors.
Exploring their levels of satisfaction and expectations after attending IRCs session.
The impact of IRCs on the students
during a four-month-long psychology course.
GEN-209 (Introduction to social psychology) course description:
Social Psychology is a theoretical course that discusses the theories of social psychology and the research process used to understand behavior. The course is designed to increase students’ accuracy in their understanding of human behavior and mental health in social situations. It attempts to determine how an individual behaves in a certain environment or in the presence of others. Since human is social being this scientific study talks about how individuals think and behave in social situations. The course introduces students to fundamental concepts of social psychology like attitude formation, self-identity, social conformity, the motivations for pro-social behavior, group work processes, and other pertinent topics. It promotes reflection on the implications of social psychological research for everyday situations. Overall, it is meant to be equally focused on the field’s core concepts and practical applications. This course connects social psychological concepts to everyday life in order to gain a better understanding of oneself and others.
This course enables students to design and demonstrate research on a preliminary level to understand human behavior better and also develop the capacity to analyze basic research findings, recognize, develop and reflect on arguments about yourself as an individual, based on gender and the surrounding others, explore the dynamics of interpersonal relationships that create diversity in the pattern of social relations.
